SEO - What You Need to Know

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a very powerful method of generating tons of free traffic for your website. SEO services can cost you an arm and a leg, and not many people have the SEO knowledge to get their website listed Google's first page for highly competitive keywords. Fortunately for you, there are many cheap and even free resources to get you the piles of search engine traffic you've been waiting for.

1. Long Tail Keywords

If you aren't a professional SEO, don't waste your time trying to compete with the "big-dog" corporate sites for very general keywords. You won't beat Netflix for the keyword "movie rental." However, there are other keywords that will get you smaller amounts of very targeted traffic.

Internet marketers without a background in SEO use "long tail" keywords, or very targeted keywords that are searched less often but are easier to optimize for. So, you might be able to make the first page of Google for "diy home gardening tips" even if you can't get to the top for "gardening".

Do some research on how to properly set up META tags, and if you're using a WordPress blog I highly recommend the All-in-One SEO Pack plugin.

2. Backlinking

Without a doubt the most important thing you can do for your site. Find other sites that Google already ranks highly in their searches and get linked! Try link exchanges, forum signatures, or guest blog posts.

3. Content

Google not only "likes" sites with lots of high quality content, it also "likes" sites that are constantly updated. Write quality articles often and keep your site updated.

4. Use header and bold tags

Use your h1 and bold tags sparingly but always, always place them around the key phrases which include your keywords. Google "likes" this a lot.

5. Get featured

Try to write articles and have them featured in e-zines or guest write for popular blogs and place your link in your article. These links will stay active for a long time and boost your Google ranks.
